What is inconel?

inconel2

Inconel is a good example of a high performance metal specifically formulated for some of the most rigorous applications. Inconel is often less familiar than steel or aluminum because it is generally more expensive and less used. This article will provide some basics about Inconel and provide answers to some common questions about this unique metal.

What is inconel?

  • Inco is the name given to a group of nickel-based superalloys. The  name is a registered trademark of Specialty Metals Corporation, New Hartford, New York. The company acquired its name by acquiring companies that previously developed various Inconel alloys. The first alloys were originally formulated for the harsh high temperature environments of the mid-20th century.
  • Uniform corrosion of InCONel products can occur in acidic or hot alkaline solutions. Through this mechanism losses can be anticipated and allowed in the design. Inco products corrode at a very slow rate when the metal is in a passive state, generally resisting corrosion better with larger chromium content, but other solutes can be harmful.
  • The importance of the transformation of the metallurgy of  steel products at this stage cannot be overestimated. This conversion allows a wide range of microstructure to be achieved through controlled heat treatment. Essentially related to microstructure, mechanical properties,  steel products can therefore be obtained over a very wide range of strength, toughness, etc. Conventional production  steel 100 mpa over 1 GPA has a strong competitive strength. Therefore, the primary concern is the knowledge of the relative stability of the BCC and FCC structures of iron  steel.
  • It is used in many different industries. One of the most common applications of inco is in the aerospace industry, namely the high-temperature environment inside jet engines. Fuel nozzles, afterburner rings, and other engine components are usually made of inco. This is because they perform well at the high temperatures found during operation. They also protect against the corrosion risks posed by jet fuels and other liquids. It is also commonly used in rockets and space exploration ships. Alloys commonly used in the aerospace industry include  625 and  718.

The chemical composition of inconel

Because it is a group of superalloys rather than just one superalloy, its chemical composition varies from alloy type to alloy type. However, all the alloys in the inco series are nickel-based alloys. In addition, chromium is usually the second most abundant element in the chemical composition of it. Almost every  nickel alloy contains some amount of iron, almost always more than 1%. Other elements found in certain alloys include:

  • cobalt
  • molybdenum
  • niobium
  • titanium

What is inconel used for?

  • It is used in many different industries. One of the most common applications of inconel is in the aerospace industry, namely the high-temperature environment inside jet engines. • Another common use of Inco superalloys is in the nuclear industry. Nuclear reactors require high strength, high corrosion resistance and excellent high-temperature performance, which is why inco is often used. Alloys commonly used in the nuclear industry include Inco 600 and Inco 690.
  • Other industries that use less  include automotive, manufacturing equipment/tools, oil and gas, firearms, etc. Any application that requires high strength and corrosion resistance in high-temperature environments is generally a good candidate for It.
