Vacuum induction furnace steelmaking

The inductor and crucible of vacuum induction furnace are installed in the furnace shell made of stainless steel, and the gas in the shell is pumped by vacuum pump during steelmaking to maintain a certain vacuum degree. There are gaskets between the cover and the shell to prevent air from entering from the outside of the shell. The shell and the crucible in it can be turned around a rotating shaft to pour out the refined liquid steel.

  • A more complete removal of gas in liquid steel. According to the law of gas dissolution in physical chemistry, the dissolution amount of diatomic gas in molten steel is proportional to the square root of the partial pressure of the gas in furnace gas
  • When the vacuum degree in the furnace is very high, the content of hydrogen and nitrogen in the liquid steel can be reduced to a very low degree. The experimental results show that the hydrogen content in steel can be reduced to 1× 10-4% when the vacuum degree reaches 1.3MP
  • Because the melting of charge and superheat of liquid steel are carried out under vacuum condition, the degree of oxidation in steel is slight. Inclusions are rarely formed, so as long as the charge is clean, the polished steel is pure.
  • Under vacuum conditions, carbon has a high deoxidation capacity, because the carbon oxidation reactant CO is excluded, so that the reaction can be carried out thoroughly. Therefore, in the process of vacuum induction furnace steelmaking, the carbon deoxidation is very complete, without adding other deoxidizers in the deoxidization.

Problems existing in induction furnace steelmaking

  • Each element in liquid steel has a certain vapor pressure. When the vapor pressure of an element exceeds the external pressure, this element in liquid steel will be evaporated. In the steel making of electric arc furnace and general induction furnace, the element with higher vapor pressure in liquid steel is mainly manganese, which will have significant evaporation phenomenon. Temperature has a great influence on the evaporation rate of manganese, because the vapor pressure of manganese increases with the increase of temperature. In addition to manganese, copper is also relatively easy to evaporate, but the evaporation rate is much smaller than manganese, iron and other elements evaporation is very little.

  • The furnace lining material will be eroded by molten steel in vacuum steelmaking, which is manifested by the reduction of SIO2 in refractory materials by carbon in molten steel. As a result, the reduction product SI enters molten steel and changes the chemical composition in molten steel, causing pollution.
  • In atmospheric melting conditions, due to the high atmospheric CO partial pressure, the reaction degree is very small, but in vacuum, the CO partial pressure is close to zero, so the reaction is more intense. The result is lower carbon content and higher silicon content in liquid steel. The silicon content of steel with carbon content of 0.2% increases and carbon content decreases in al2o3-sio2 crucible.
  • In the process of vacuum induction furnace steelmaking, attention should be paid to the change of chemical composition of steel liquefaction.
